Known for its fearless approach to automotive innovation, Beijing has made a significant impact on the Western auto industry with the quality and technology of its latest models. This has left many industry leaders feeling uneasy.

Despite facing steep tax increases and numerous anti-competitive tactics from the West, Beijing continues to advance confidently.

In South Africa, we enjoy a wide range of options, from mobility scooters to enormous bakkies that dwarf all others in the country. When Jetour introduced its first vehicle, the Jetour X70, in 2018, I looked into the brand and found the name rather uninspiring. I dismissed them as a fleeting car manufacturer that wouldn’t last long.

To my surprise, they expanded into several countries, particularly in the Middle East and Latin America. I even spotted their vehicles on the streets of Russia while watching RTA, which gave me a sense of their growing presence there. I later discovered that Jetour is part of the well-established Chery brand known worldwide.

It has been some time since 2018.

The competition in our country is fierce, with many consumers loyal to established mainstream brands.

Jetour conducted extensive market research and spent months preparing for its launch, securing thousands of square meters of spare parts in warehouses. The launch took place the weekend before Heritage Day, featuring a vibrant display of multicultural music and dance to celebrate South African heritage. Despite being on one of the coldest nights in Sandton, Jetour created a warm and inviting atmosphere that made everyone forget the chill.

Currently, they offer two models, the X70 Plus and Dashing, each available in two trims, resulting in four sub-models. Jetour’s president, Li Xueyong, announced that the company has sold over 1.2 million cars globally. He shared their goal of selling 2,000 cars in South Africa this year, aiming to become the third best-selling Chinese brand in the country. He announced plans to improve their offerings and introduce the high-end T2 model next year.

Snapshot product review

The X70 draws inspiration from the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, while its dashboard design resembles that of the Tiggo 7 Pro. There are clear design elements that reflect Chery’s style. The rear features LED lights reminiscent of the Audi Q8, and the front has hints of the Toyota Cross. A touch of red trim at the front adds a sporty flair, and the 19-inch wheels contribute to its premium appearance. The rear bumper also carries this upscale vibe.

Like the Chery 8 Pro, the X70 sports faux quad exhaust pipes that enhance its aesthetic appeal. The design reflects a youthful and playful character, mirroring the Lamborghini Urus’ front and rear views. The front end also shows some influence from the BAIC X55, particularly with its pointed hood. Both models share the same 1.5-liter turbocharged engine, providing a respectable 115 kW. While it may not be a drag racer, it provides sufficient power for safe overtaking on highways and handles hilly terrains with ease.

Inside, the cabin features a large digital display and infotainment system reminiscent of the X55 and Chery cockpit. The upholstery feels like genuine leather, though it’s labelled as a leather alternative, and the contrasting red stitching enhances its appearance. The front bucket seats are quite comfortable, and the X70 accommodates seven passengers, while the youthful dash version seats five. Overall, the interior impresses, with the first two rows comfortably fitting five adults.

Pricing and trimmings

Most safety features that are typically found in higher-priced vehicles come standard with this model, except for the 360-degree camera, lane assist, and rear cross-traffic alert, which are exclusive to the Deluxe trim, a step above the Momentum. The Dashing starts at R439,900 for the Momentum trim, while the Deluxe version is available for R469,900. The X70 Pro Momentum is priced at R454,900, with the Deluxe version costing R484,900.

All models come with a 150,000 km warranty and a service plan covering 5 years or 60,000 km, whichever comes first. According to my contact at the Automobile Association of South Africa, they rarely receive call-outs for the Cherry brand, indicating its reliability in the country.

While it may not be a VW T-Cross, it offers impressive specifications, making it an attractive option, especially considering its pricing and dependability.

Only time will tell if it captures the attention of South Africans like other Cherry products have.
