In the world of automobiles, the Regera stands out as a high-performance marvel. It proudly boasts the title of the fastest saloon globally, and Koenigsegg boldly refers to it as the world’s first Mega GT. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 400 kilometres per hour, the Regera is truly a force to be reckoned with.”
After watching a cartoon Grand Prix movie, Christian Koenigsegg, a Swedish citizen, was inspired to create a high-performance car. Despite the overwhelming scepticism from professionals in the automotive sector, he pursued his dream and researched the subject.
He was determined to pursue his passion for supercars despite being advised that luxury sedans and SUVs were the future of the automotive industry. Undeterred, he boldly established Koenigsegg Automotive in 1994 at the age of 22, raising $5 million from investors who had confidence in his dream.
Koenigsegg debuted with a stunning design that made his car stand out from most supercars, sporting a red and gold shield badge that I suspect was borrowed from Porsche. At first glance, it is unmistakably a Koenigsegg. He also introduced the fastest charging technology, surpassing most billion-dollar automotive industries with the Koenigsegg Regera. It is so small that one might be forgiven for thinking it could disappear under a minibus taxi.
Daytona Motor Corporation, based in the north of Johannesburg, is the sole authorised dealership in the entire country. Unfortunately, the super high-performance Jesco model, which has recently made waves in European and Western markets, is not available here.
The Jesco boasts a V8 twin-turbo engine paired with cutting-edge transmission technology, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a mind-blowing 1.9 seconds. To put this into perspective, the lightning-fast BMW M5 achieves the same speed in approximately 3.4 seconds. Most hypercars of this calibre can go from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds, but going below 2 seconds is truly unprecedented!
The Jesco even comes equipped with a radar system to monitor the g-forces exerted on the driver’s body, making the driving experience akin to being in a fighter jet. The aerodynamic design of the Jesco’s front end further emphasises this similarity. As if reaching 0 to 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds wasn’t impressive enough, the Jesco can hit a top speed of over 412 km/h in just 27 seconds!
Upon its debut, it shattered numerous speed records in a single day, including going from 400 km/h to a complete stop in just a few seconds.
Many motoring journalists at the Jesco launch event have already dubbed it the fastest car in the world. The Bugatti Veyron, with its WR engine, set numerous speed records and was initially priced at around 1.5 million dollars (approximately R27 million in South Africa).
It is, therefore, no surprise that we rarely see an actual Veyron on our roads. The current Bugatti La Voiture Noire retails for about $18.9 million, which is over R340 million. Daytona didn’t pay much attention to Bugatti, as they believed it would be a challenge to sell more than 3 units at that price.
However, the Koenigsegg is a different story.
According to Daytona, who has introduced brands like Rolls Royce and Mercedes Brabus to South Africa, there have been numerous inquiries from individuals who enjoy pink salmon and fish roe as a snack. The Koenigsegg Jesco and Regera have been excluded from all future offerings in South Africa. The four-seater Regera will be the only model available in South Africa, with the possibility of introducing other models based on future demand.
The Regera follows the Koenigsegg tradition of ultra-luxury megacars, featuring a potent V8 engine and three advanced electric motors. Its lightweight design is achieved through the use of carefully selected materials. The DSG transmission is renowned as the fastest in the automotive industry.
Still, Koenigsegg has introduced an even better and quicker transmission system called Koenigsegg Direct Drive, resulting in seamless acceleration and deceleration without any noticeable transmission activity.
The Koenigsegg brand is renowned for its exceptional speed, practicality, and comfort. The Regera upholds this tradition by combining innovative technology and incredible speed with supreme comfort.
One of the groundbreaking features of the Regera is the engine resting on active soft mounts. Under normal driving conditions, the car provides a smooth and quiet experience, isolating all engine noise to deliver a luxurious and comfortable ride. However, during more spirited driving conditions, the mounts firm up to provide a responsive steering feel similar to that of a go-kart.
Additionally, the hybrid system offers electric-only mode or combined power, allowing for acceleration that can produce g-forces capable of making even a Mig 35 pilot envious. The Koenigsegg direct drive (KDD) completely replaces the internal combustion engine (ICE) and provides direct drive to the rear axle without the need for multiple gears. This results in a system that seamlessly handles immense amounts of torque without causing damage to the gearbox.
The Regera DOHC dry-sump 5-litre V8 engine, in combination with three electric motors, generates an impressive 1118kw of power. To put things into perspective, the most powerful Mercedes G wagon only produces 430kw of power. In the automotive industry, the Regera is like a mad cheetah on steroids. It holds the title of the fastest saloon in the world and Koenigsegg proudly refers to it as the world’s first Mega GT. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km in just 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 400 kilometres per hour, the Regera is truly a force to be reckoned with.
Surprisingly, it offers a comfortable ride, unlike the traditional hypercars known for their back-breaking and stiff suspension. Daytona has chosen not to disclose the pricing of the Regera, similar to the highly customisable Rolls Royce. This exceptional vehicle can travel up to 50kms on electric-only mode while providing a luxurious experience with an 11-speaker system playing Pavarotti, three-zone climate control, and onboard Wi-Fi for the kids.
Generally, the pricing is expected to be around 8 million Rand, a reasonable amount for Daytona customers who have previously spent 18 million Rand on a 6X6 G Wagon and 16 million Rand on the Rolls Royce Cullinan.
The fuel consumption of 22 litres per 100kms is also not a concern for potential buyers.
